Location

Killingworth, CT

Tucked away on a wooded country road sits this historic barn which was relocated from another site many years ago and converted into a cozy, rustic residence. Unfortunately, the home had multiple deficiencies that needed to be corrected including steep, narrow stairways. We removed and filled in the old stairways and found a more conducive location for a new, comfortable, switchback stair with skylight above. We renovated the kitchen with updated, yet vintage feeling cabinetry and associated features. We reconfigured about a third of the floor plan to make it more functional, interesting, and provide better access to the exterior. We created a new mudroom, half bath, and laundry closet – all with updated, yet vintage features. We added a new primary suite with bedroom, bathroom, and closet, again acknowledging the barn aesthetic while generally making the spaces more comfortable, quiet, and calming. We also created a new guest bath, loft space, and second floor art studio using skylights to bathe the spaces with diffused natural light and dramatic views into the surrounding trees and sky. To round out the project, we added air conditioning and all new windows, roofing, and garage doors. (Photos by Caryn B. Davis)
