Chester, CT

This existing home is located down a long gravel drive, lined by a sturdy stone wall on the left, and hidden from the road by wooded wetlands on the right. At the end of the drive, the property opens up to a nicely landscaped yard surrounded by beautiful mature trees and a variety of understory plants. The client had a straightforward request to add a pleasant, covered front porch for both her and her elderly mother to enjoy the outdoors regardless of varying weather conditions. A flush floor condition from inside to outside was critical; a larger, more gracious foyer was desired; and because we reduced some of the natural light in the front sitting room as a result of the new covered porch, we added two new transom windows to compensate and to provide wonderful views up into the surrounding tree canopy. We made sure the existing walkway worked seamlessly with the new porch steps and relocated front door. The final touches included carefully selected wall sconces, ceiling fan, and well coordinated clapboard siding, weathered grey decking, and traditional beadboard ceiling. (Photos by Caryn B. Davis)
