This vintage 1770 home of Captain Abraham Crane in the historic town of Old Wethersfield was in need of a mudroom and garage. Working off the more recent kitchen addition, we introduced a cozy, but highly functional mudroom.  It features a heated polished concrete floor which is extremely durable and does a great job warming the space and melting snow off winter boots.  Flanking built-in cubbies provide convenient, organized family storage for coats, shoes, hats, and gloves. A cathedral ceiling and lots of glass provide a bright, fresh, welcoming atmosphere.  Outside, the mudroom entrance is framed by new vintage style wall sconces and a stamped and stained concrete terrace and steps to match the existing rear patio. The garage features stable style overhead doors, board & batten siding, and black barn lights. The roof pitches were carefully calculated to dovetail beautifully with the existing house. The project was approved by the Historic Commission and does a wonderful job marrying new and old. (Photos by Caryn. B. Davis)
