Madison, CT

In the northern woods of Madison, this saltbox style house provided no views or natural light on the rear side of the second floor. On the first floor, the client desired an updated kitchen which similarly lacked sufficient views and natural light. Above the garage, the client wanted to create an accessory apartment accessed from both the exterior and interior of the house. Stylistically, the client enjoyed a mix of clean Scandinavian design with classic traditional touches. For the second floor, we added a shed dormer off the rear side of the saltbox filled with a rhythm of large windows. This allowed us to create a larger bedroom, playroom, full bathroom, and new laundry closet. For the first floor, we relocated the garage entry door; converted an oversized half bath and laundry closet into a new mudroom, half bath, and pantry area; and made the kitchen more functional and visually compelling. The apartment includes a bedroom, full bathroom, and studio style living, dining, and kitchen area, once again with lots of nice views and natural light. Fun lighting and tile was incorporated throughout the design to further reflect the varied tastes, interests, and talents of the client. (Photos by Caryn B. Davis)
